Under the Bridge – Red Hot Chili Peppers

This is one of my favorite songs by the Red Hot Chili Peppers.  They were one of my favorite bands growing up.  I read Anthony Kiedis‘ autobiography Scar Tissue and it was really good.  I found him to be honest about a lot of the troubles he had, mostly related to drug addiction.  He had a wild upbringing.  It’s kind of a miracle he survived.

I really like Anthony as a singer.  Some people hate on him and say he can’t sing.  I don’t think that’s true at all.  Try singing his songs yourself and see how you sound.  Probably not as good as he does.  There’s an interview out there where he and Flea both cry when talking about Anthony’s supposed lack of musicianship.  But Flea really summed it up when he said that all of the great singers out there sound like themselves.  For me, the take away there is that they’re not trying to do an impression of anyone else.

One thing about Anthony is that he always sounds like Anthony, and no one sounds exactly like him.  I think that’s the greatest compliment you can give a vocalist.  They’re truly unique – they sound like themselves.
