Runnin’ Down a Dream – Tom Petty
I grew up listening to Tom Petty and he is one of my biggest musical influences. I believe it was my parents who first introduced me to him.
Tom was a great songwriter who could turn a few chords and a few words into something magical. Some would say he was the godfather of the grunge movement (which includes Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, and several more of my favorite bands) and I can’t argue with that.
Tom will always be one of my heroes in music. I have always dug his style. He made so many hits that it’s hard to narrow them down, but some of my favorites are Runnin’ Down a Dream, Refugee, Learning to Fly, I Won’t Back Down, Free Fallin’, You Don’t Know How It Feels, and Mary Jane’s Last Dance. There are others, too. Tom was a prolific hitmaker.
He always struck me as a guy who I would have loved to hang out with, though I never got the chance. He has to be one of the coolest guys ever. What a great legacy he left in music.
