Generational Chains
Why is it that as adults
We seem destined to recreate
The most chaotic parts
Of our childhood
Why are generational chains
So hard to break?
Why is it that we seem destined
To become
The one thing we swore
We would never become
As though it is a curse
That cannot be broken
Why must pain be passed
From one generation
To the next
As through it wasn’t enough
To be suffered the first time
And must be suffered again
By our offspring, too
Who writes these rules
And why did they make it so
These generational curses
That won’t leave us alone
All of the anger
Passed down from one
To the next in line
And so on
And so on
Until the line ends
Or some brave soul breaks
The generational chains
And God only knows how
I only know
That it takes forgiveness
And love to heal
But I can’t explain the rest
It’s a riddle
That can’t be solved
But if I could solve it
I’d change the world
And make it a better place
But I don’t know how
Generational suffering
Has no easy cure
And gets passed down
From one to the next
And nobody really knows
How it works
Or why
Some people say it doesn’t exist
But those who’ve experienced it
Know that it does
Why must wounds be passed down
As though it is an inescapable truth
That our children must suffer
As we did
Surely they will have challenges
But hopefully they will be different
Not the same ones
Over and over again
God give us the courage
And the wisdom
To break the generational chains
Before they enslave us all
